An Caislean Nua are delighted that their Chairman Neil Cody received "Sports Volunteer of the Year" at the Echo Sports Awards 2013. Here is an extract of the interview he gave to the Echo Newspaper which featured a full article about Neil's work and An Caislean Nua Badminton Club in their December special of their awards ceremony:

How did you feel when it was revealed that you were the winner of The Sports Volunteer of the Year Award?
At the awards it was fantastic to see the amount of teams and sports people being celebrated and rewarded for their achievements so it did come as a pleasant surprise when I was awarded Sports Volunteer of the Year. I was lucky to have my parents with me at the event, which made it extra special. I am honored, proud and extremely grateful to the Echo, the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Group and the SDCSP for the award. I want to thank Stephen Leonard for all his support and interest in our badminton club. He has helped share my story and the club's story through his publications which I am extremely grateful for. My award now has a proud place in the trophy cabinet.

Looking at how much the club has progressed, how proud are you of your work?
I am extremely proud. I am very passionate about coaching players and developing the club from an operational perspective. It has been an exciting project over the last few years. What brings me most pleasure is seeing new players joining and assimilating into the culture and philosophy of our badminton club and developing their game to new levels year on year. The growth from 2 teams to now 20 teams is a testament to the growth of our club and I am proud of my contribution in achieving this.

Any future plans for the club?
The strategy for this season is to have competitive representation across all divisions in the league and cup competitions. My plans for the future is to continue to develop out the capability of our club through coaching & development, and fitness programs during the off-season (summer). We are an extremely progressive and ambitious badminton club and hope to achieve success together as a unified club. I would also like to create an annual tournament & event that will be hosted by our club and feature on the tournament calendar. To achieve this we would welcome sponsorship from local businesses that wish to be part of our success story. I am lucky to have like-minded people in the club like Fiachra Keogh who help me drive the club forward and achieve our goals and ambitions. I am very excited about our club's future. Receiving this award will hopefully raise our profile within the local community and potentially open opportunities to help support our continued growth as a badminton club.
